Without dieting, I have gained freedom and peace, joy and trust.
My relationship with myself has flourished. My relationships with other people have deepened, and I have literally become the woman of my dreams.
I know, I know, it sounds dramatic, but I’m not even exaggerating.
Here are 6 things I’ve gained since I gave up dieting:
It is so normal to moralize food. My relationship with food used to be so tumultuous. Work it off, earn it, avoid it, overindulge, cheat…were just a few of my common ways of engaging with it. Talk about a toxic relationship!
And yet, I don’t blame myself. That was all I knew, but the truth is food is so much more. Food is connection, social interaction, comfort and care, fuel and nourishment. Food is fun.
I now know that food is a beautiful and easy part of life. No more stress, and guilt, and punishment. I trust my body and myself, and I eat a variety of whatever foods I want always.
That was a revelation – the day I realized that clothes should fit me, and that I didn’t need to fit into clothes.
Ditching dieting meant finally allowing my body to exist without control or manipulation. It meant allowing my body to settle and find where it was truly healthy, because get this, true health is when your body is authentically healthy, mentally, physically, emotionally, socially, and so much more… not when its controlled and policed.
A part of putting this into action in my life was leaning into what I love, and I do love clothes, and letting go of judgment. If I love it and it feels good, I’ll wear it! If I don’t or it doesn’t, then it’s not worth it.
Self-objectifying is when you understand yourself as an object to be viewed, instead of a whole person with ambition, purpose, values, passions, morals, interests, and so much more.
Once I stopped dieting and thinking of myself as a problem to be fixed, I was able begin enjoy the present moment and enjoy every experience in life.
Instead of viewing myself though a judgmental lens at all times, I am now able to live in the moment and what a beautiful way to live that is!
In giving up dieting, I promised to allow myself unconditional permission to eat all foods, as taught in Intuitive Eating.
And you know what this has done for me?
It created balance.
Unconditional permission to eat all foods sounds scary. Maybe it sounds like loss of control or overeating, but in reality it makes space for balance and peace.
You know what else I gained? Flexibility!
Not the splits, but the ability it go with the flow. Takeaway the rules and the judgement, and add in kindness, trust, and joy. And what you have is the ability to no longer feel held back, pinned down, or downright scared of food and social situations.
I now have no doubts in myself, in my inner wisdom, and in my ability to make choices that take my whole self into account, in every moment and experience.
Finally, I am not tied down to any diet, program, or plan. I know that I can be healthy in any and every situation. I have found peace and freedom and joy in life. Ditching dieting created the brain space and heart space to follow my dreams, explore passionately, grow exponentially, and connect deeply.
It wasn’t easy, but it wasn’t rocket science either.
It’s simply reconnecting to yourself. You already have what you need within you. It never ceases to amaze me that making peace with food, healing your relationship with your body, and reestablishing your connection with your inner wisdom can open up a world of happiness and freedom that you never knew you could reach.
